Vaginal Plastic Surgery - Vaginal Rejuvenation
Childbirth and aging can exert a toll on the vagina, causing laxity. Many women are concerned by the loose opening of the vagina and also the stretched out vaginal canal, fearing the change in sexual function for themselves and their partners.
Often, there are associated symptoms of uncontrolled urine loss with coughing, sneezing, and exertion due to the loss of vaginal support of the bladder neck, a condition called stress urinary incontinence. Occasionally, the bladder and the rectum push into the vagina due to the weakness of the vaginal wall, causing vaginal prolapse termed cystocele (bladder), rectocele (rectum), or even uterine prolapse, where the uterus and cervix drop down towards the vaginal opening.
Stress urinary incontinence and uterine and vaginal prolapse are conditions that warrant medically indicated corrective surgical procedures, usually covered by health insurance. Frequently, women are concerned about the looseness of the vagina and its opening for purely aesthetic and functional reasons. Those concerns can be addressed by vaginal rejuvenation, a procedure that brings the vagina back to the pre-childbirth state both in look and function. Vaginal rejuvenation is usually considered an elective cosmetic procedure.
Vaginal rejuvenation involves the rebuilding of the vaginal structures that support and contract the vagina. The muscle groups and the support tissue around the vagina are tightened in purposeful steps to narrow the caliber of the vaginal canal and the vaginal opening and to enhance the contraction of the vaginal muscle groups.
At times, excessive vaginal tissue is trimmed off and tightened. Vaginal rejuvenation can often be supplemented by labiaplasty (labioplasty) to restore a more youthful, pre-childbirth appearance of the genitalia.
