Gynecology - Alternative to Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy, the removal of the uterus, with or without the tubes and ovaries, has traditionally been a solution provided to women with pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding or uterine prolapse. Dr. Michael Lau believes that this over aggressive approach can be replaced by much simpler and safer alternatives to hysterectomy.

What exactly is alternative to hysterectomy? It is the approach that addresses the specific cause or causes that contribute to the problems of pain, bleeding, and so forth without the need to non-specifically remove the uterus with a hysterectomy. An analogy would be trimming off only a part of an ingrown toenail that is causing pain instead of removing the entire toe.

Coming from a background of graduate training in physics, Dr. Michael Lau has been in the forefront of technology development to offer solutions for hysterectomy alternatives. Dr. Lau was one of the first gynecologic surgeons to perform laser surgery for pelvic diseases as an alternative to hysterectomy in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. With laser laparoscopy, Dr. Lau can take care of the severe pain caused by pelvic endometriosis and yet leave the uterus intact.

As a recognized expert in endometrial ablation, the procedure that decreases or eliminates heavy menstrual flow as a hysterectomy alternative, Dr. Lau was one of the first gynecologists in the U.S. to perform Microwave Endometrial Ablation. Currently, Dr. Lau is performing an office procedure, without the need of general anesthetic, to eliminate or decrease the flow of heavy menses using Her Option Endometrial Cryoablation as an excellent form of alternative to hysterectomy.

Dr. Lau is working on using ultrasound image guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to treat a fibroid uterus non-invasively as an alternative to hysterectomy for patients with fibroid tumors and heavy menstrual bleeding. The clinical studies are all conducted abroad and not currently available in the U.S. at this time.

Dr. Lau recognizes that the key to approaching pelvic disease is to treat the specific pathology with a specific treatment modality and not by removing the whole uterus, unnecessarily most of the time. Dr. Lau has been providing alternatives to hysterectomy for women in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years.
